I hate the word lazy
The definition of lazy is:
"Someone who is unwilling to do work or expend energy"
There is nothing wrong with the definition. Yhe problem is people will ask "why isn't Jim getting any work done" and get the reply "He's just lazy". Well why the fuck is jim UNWILLING to do work? What is making Jim unwilling? You can't say that it's his fucking laziness. The word lazy doesn't explain why someone is unwilling it just states that they are. So why are people unwilling? Saying that they're just lazy doesn't offer them any solution. What do you do?
I used to think poker players, specifically tournament players were the laziest because they rarely study. I realized much later on though that they're unwilling to expend energy (lazy) because it's hard. When something is too hard we don't do it. For example if I gave you an advanced calculus problem, I can say with 100% certainty you'll give up unless you're already good at math. Also if I told you to do basic addition for 5 hours straight you'd give up too because it's too easy. There is a sweet spot you need to hit to get to the flow state (or to just actually put in the time), check out this Ted Talk on it.
Another aspect is rewards, if I told you I'd give you 10k if you worked 5 hours straight on basic addition, I guarantee even the laziest person you know will do it. The problem is when people study poker they don't see the rewards necessarily, it's not like tennis or basketball or any other game where if you work hard for a week (sometimes a day) you will see some improvement. A better serve of a higher shooting %. You don't get that feedback so easily with poker, so it often feels pointless.
The correlation between how much you improved and how much more you win isn't as strong as it is in every other game. You can play a hand better, run into the nuts and lose. So the reward system is fucked up. Then there is the paradox of choice, there are so many things to work on people don't know where to start, furthermore the stuff they're working on they can't be sure what they're thinking is right or wrong.
This just scratches the surface of motivation, there is also stuff like purpose/meaning, depression, low confidence, diet, meditation maybe even genetics and more. The question of why people do and don't do things is a fascinating one, just saying people are lazy infuriates me.
