On Justin Bonomo refusing to take a winners photo
Brief summary of the events: Bonomo plays EPT Monte Carlo an event hosted by Amaya (pokerstars), he wins and refuses to take a winners photo. Read this for more details.
I never write about poker gossip but today is an exception. Many people stated that "It's hypocritical/illogical to play the event and not take the photo. Just don't play the event". I felt like writing about why this statement is incorrect.
Look at the difference in what he will lose from both actions (a good method to use almost any decision):
Not playing the event:
- Opportunity to play some of most prestigious MTTs of the year
- A trip to monte carlo
- Time with friends
- and ability to play all future Amaya events ( if you skip this 1, you skip them all)
Not taking the picture:
- They might threaten to ban him from all future live events
You might say that if he refused the picture he will get banned but that's not true. If he refuses the picture he might be threatened to be banned. If that happens he can take the photo and lose nothing.
This is insanely advantageous.
It's analogous to taking back your river bluff after it gets called, or a chess move that will lead to checkmate.
Are these actually analogous though? I can check by expressing the actual situation with letters (the fancy word for this is logical formalism I think):
Justin refuses a photo (call this action X). he then learns that leads to getting banned ( the consequence of X is Y) He decides not to take this action (X) anymore.
So I can restate this as:
Justin does X, he learns that X leads to Y therefore he decides not to do X.
These letters are just like fill in the blanks you can put almost anything in there. As long as it follows these rules:
The X can be any action
the Y must be a reasonable consequence of X
Action: a bet on a football game (action X)
Consequence of the action: You lose (Y)
Reversal of the action: You take back the bet
Of course this is impossible, but in the initial case the reversal is possible. So refusing a photo has no downsides, while not playing has a ton of them. It's not hypocritical or illogical at all.
For a bit of practice check the other analogies I made to see if they follow the rules. See if you can create your own analogous situations….or not.
